Canseco Goes Hitless in MMA Debut

As expected, Jose Canseco went hitless while making his MMA debut in Japan, as the controversial former baseball slugger was quickly dispatched by South Korean giant Hong Man Choi. Competing in Dream’s “Super Hulk” tournament, Canseco quickly discovered that years of steroids abuse, coiffing his hair, and writing scandalous ‘tell all books’, were, shockingly yes, of no help against his 7’2 tall opponent. Now to be fair, Canseco did manage to land a couple of kicks, and he did throw a few hard right hands at the K-1 vet Choi, but after appearing to hurt his knee shortly into the bout, the 44 year-old-fighter was overwhelmed by Choi and tapped out to strikes at 1:20 of round 1.
(Unfortunately, MMA Fix has been unable to confirm whether or not reports alleging that Canseco was doing push-ups for spare change outside the stadium afterwards, are in fact accurate.)
Although no one here at MMA Fix speaks Korean, somehow we’re sure that Choi began to smack talk Danny Bonaduce immediately following the bout, either that, or he was calling out Carrot Top… Dream has not, as of yet, announced any plans for Dennis Rodman to enter the tourney’s second round, although rumors persist that the promotion is working on signing Vanilla Ice to be his opponent.
The event did feature some MMA bouts of interest, including MTV Bully Beatdown star Jason “Mayhem” Miller taking on Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza for the promotion’s middleweight crown. (The two had fought once before as Souza defeated Miller by Unanimous Decision last June) Unfortunately, early on Miller caught Souza with an illegal kick to the head as the Brazilian was on the mat, and the bout was soon after declared a No Contest, due to a large cut Souza had incurred.
In other notable bouts from the second round of Dream’s featherweight tournament: accomplished wrestler and MMA newcomer Joe Warren worked his way to a Split Decision over Japanese star Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, Bibiano Fernandes outscored leg lock master Masakazu Imanari for the Unanimous Decision win, Hideo Tokoro tapped out Abel Cullum and Hiroyuki Takaya stopped Yoshihiro Maeda with strikes.
In other results from the opening round of the “Super Hulk” tourney, Ikuhisa Minowa tapped out American giant Bob Sapp, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou blasted away Jan Nortje and Gegard Mousasi submitted Mark Hunt.
In the card’s all-star lightweight clash, Tatsuya Kawajiri controlled Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante en route to a Unanimous Decision win.
