Despite nearly sending Michael Bisping’s head through the Octagon floor Saturday night, with a leaping follow up punch that resulted in a collective, million person, “oh sh#t” that could be heard around the world, Dan Henderson may not be next in line for a middleweight title shot. In the UFC 100 post fight press conference, Dana White was non-committal as to whether or not Henderson would fight champion Anderson Silva next. (Thanks to MMAJunkie for the heads up)
“Could be,” White said. “We’ve got to figure out dates, times. (Silva) is fighting in August, and then we’ll figure it out from there. We’ll see what happens.”
Although a Henderson, Silva rematch would surely entertain, the Brazilian’s second round jiu-jitsu seminar on the wonders of the rear-naked-choke to Hendo last March, might still be too fresh in the minds of fans to make it a compelling bout at this juncture. (As of today, Bisping likely has no recollection of that fight, let alone Saturday night)
If the undefeated, Demian ‘wow; he has him tapping already?’ Maia can get by Nathan Marquardt August 29th, a title fight with Silva may be coming his way. Of course, White has also expressed interest in Vitor Belfort, who will fight Jorge Santiago August 1st at Affliction’s ‘Trilogy.’ Last but not least, Silva is of course taking on former light-heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin at UFC 101, so the outcome of that bout will likely determine when “The Spider” will defend his 185lb. belt.
