Report: Randy Couture to Face Mark Coleman at UFC 109

According to a report from Sherdog.com’s Loretta Hunt, Randy “The Natural” Couture and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman have verbally agreed to fight February 6^th at UFC 109. The story cites “sources close to the bout” for the information. (We’ve always found ‘sources close to the fighters’ as more reliable…) As the report notes, the bout would mark the first time 2 hall of famers would throw down, and we’d have to also say it will be the closest thing to  a ‘seniors’ bout the promotion has ever had. Of course that in no way means changes the fact that both dudes could kick the asses of 99% of the world’s population.

The 46 year-old Couture is coming off a razor thin decision win over Brandon Vera at UFC 105 this past weekend, while the 44 year-old Coleman hasn’t fought since July, when he worked his way to a UD win over Stephan Bonnar. The accomplished fighter was originally scheduled to fight Tito Ortiz this coming weekend at UFC 106, but had to withdraw due to a knee injury.

So, what do we think? Well, clearly any bout featuring Captain America is going to sell, as Couture has been front and center in the UFC for several years now. Coleman? Despite his accomplishments, most of his more notable wins took place when the world was still getting over the Y2K hysteria, so new school fans might not be overly familiar with “The Hammer’s” career. It could be an interesting bout on account of each guy’s wrestling abilities, but if Coleman isn’t in the best shape possible and goes into purple-gas-out mode early, the fight could be far from stellar.
