With no one really knowing when the ill Brock Lesnar will be able to return to the Octagon, speculation has begun firing around the internet, that the UFC will put together a tilt for an interim heavyweight championship. As it looks it could be time to break out the Pledge and dust off the ‘just as good but not quite’ belt, one that Frank Mir took from Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, before getting brutalized by Lesnar this past summer.
Clearly Shane Carwin would be in the mix, due to the fact he was penciled in as Lesnar’s next opponent, and with Big Nog on the sidelines because of a staph infection, rising contender Cain Velasquez is also without an opponent. Right, no need to consult with NASA’s rocket scientists on this one…When asked about the possibility of facing Velasquez for the interim belt on The Underground forum, Carwin (or a diabolical imposter) responded:
We are in talks. I have a knee I am rehabbing and a baby due on the 11th of February. I am down to do whatever is best for the division. Not sure how important the belt is in that scenario. Lots of great fighters at the top and lots of talented young guns on the way up right now.
Huh. All things considered it doesn’t sound like Carwin would be able to fight Velasquez in the immediate future anyways, and one can clearly understand that he’s probably still damn disappointed, about having his shot at Lesnar kyboshed for the time being. Is it too much to ask for a world without illness or injuries?
