Fight of the Year winner Diego Sanchez showed up in style (?) at the 2009 World MMA Awards last night.

He might’ve been a little drunk maybe (it was his 28th bday so that’s cool) but said he’s “pissed” about his loss to B.J. Penn and is ready for another fight.

Interestingly, Diego says he thinks Fedor should win Fighter of the Year. Somewhere in his ivory tower in Las Vegas, Dana White is now sending a hardcore stream of electronical current through Deigo’s body for making that comment.

Save the Jon Fitch fight, UFC 107 was an awesome card, start to finish.

B.J. Penn absolutely tore apart Diego Sanchez. Huge props to Sanchez. He showed a ridiculous amount of heart for five rounds despite seeing his face get busted up like he was fighting Freddy Krueger.

CagePotato had some interesting Penn/Sanchez fight stats (via FightMetric):

Sanchez threw 108 strikes at Penn, and only landed eight of them. Seriously. Eight, the whole fight. That’s a 7% success rate. By comparison, Penn was able to touch Sanchez 150 times out of 214 tries, for a remarkable 70% success rate. Compounding his failure, Sanchez also went 0/24 on his takedown attempts.

Main card results were:
Alan Belcher def. Wilson Gouveia via TKO in Round 1.
Stefan Struve def. Paul Buentello via decision.
Kenny Florian def. Clay Guida via rear-naked choke submission in Round 2.
Jon Fitch def. Mike Pierce via decision.
B.J. Penn def. Diego Sanchez via TKO in Round 5.

All bonuses went to the undercard fights. TJ Grant got Knockout of the Night. Submission of the Night went DaMarques Johnson. And Belcher and Gouveia took Fight of the Night.

No, actually, we’re not hung over this AM and recycling stories from this past January, as BJ Penn is once again throwing it out there that he wants to fight Georges St. Pierre one more time. (We’ll actually, on account of the ‘grease-gate’ drama that followed Penn’s second loss to GSP, that ‘it’s not quite dead yet’ horse kept kicking for months) Surprised? You don’t have to answer that.

Speaking recently to Britain’s incomparable publication, The Sun, Penn had this to say regarding a third bout with the Canadian. (Thanks to MMA Bay)

“I’m biased and I have confidence in myself and I don’t think the fight would go anything like that if we fought again.”

“I’ve got to defend the lightweight title and take on all challenges that make me better but if I get a chance to fight GSP again — even if it was a non-title fight — I’d jump at the opportunity.”

Wow. Notice that the words ‘grease,’ ‘oily’ or ‘Vaseline’ were not used…Now that’s news. Of course, up next in December, the renowned lightweight champion will have to first, survive the menacing pre-fight glare of Diego Sanchez, and then take on the contender at UFC 107. Penn conceded in the interview that the upcoming bout will be “one of my biggest tests at 155lbs.”

One last tidbit, Penn also mentioned that he was “surprised” that GSP hasn’t moved up to 185 yet to challenge Anderson Silva, stating that if he was the welterweight champ, he’d test the middleweight waters. No what do you have to say about that Monsieur St. Pierre?

With Quinton “Rampage” Jackson postponing his ‘I burn with hatred for him’ bout with Rashad Evans, in order to play his part in the upcoming A-Team flick, the UFC is continuing to fill the void left on the December 12th, UFC 107 card.

Recently it was confirmed that lightweight champ BJ Penn would face challenger Diego Sanchez at the event, (rumors continue to circulate that Sanchez believes he has now finally perfected his pre-fight ‘nightmarish’ glare, and thus, he will be able to turn Penn into stone) and now MMA Weekly is reporting that a heavyweight bout between Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo has been “verbally agreed to.”

Mir is of course coming off his well documented UFC 100 loss to Brock Lesnar, who finally avenged his previous loss to Mir, by stopping him in the second round. Kongo is also coming off a defeat, as at UFC 99, he lost by UD to rising contender Cain Velasquez.

Would we rather have seen Rampage vs. Evans at UFC 107 instead of waiting until next year? Probably. Is the card still looking good? Definitely. Are people who ask questions to themselves annoying? Yup.

Last month there were conflicting reports as to whether or not “Rampage” Jackson had in fact landed himself the role of B.A. Baracus in the upcoming film remake of “The A-Team.” On one hand, you had outlets like The Sun (which often has appeared along the words ‘tabloid’ and ‘rag’) reporting that Jackson was going to do his best Mr. T impersonation, and then others, like MTV.com, saying the reports were false.

Well, (and we understand if you have a grain of salt on stand-by) according to a report this AM from MMA Bay, the site has confirmed that Jackson has been cast in “The A-Team.” As a result, Jackson’s bout with fellow former champion Rashad Evans, which was expected to go down December 12th at UFC 107, has been postponed until next year. Of course, the reason being, that Jackson would not have enough time to properly prepare for the bout. (And remember kids, it’s a fight he wanted so badly, he turned down a shot at the champ Lyoto Machida. But hey, when Hollywood comes knocking, a chance to batter your ‘arch nemesis’ becomes secondary)

Yesterday UFC Prez Dana White stated that BJ Penn would defend his belt on December 12th, and although Diego Sanchez was not specifically mentioned during the announcement, at UFC 102 last week, White stated that the former TUF winner was next in line for a title shot. So perhaps the title fight was added to the UFC 107 card to help fill the gap from Jackson’s casting in the film? We shall see…

Just when you thought that BJ Penn’s recent win over Kenny Florian at UFC 101 would go quietly into the night without any post-fight drama, rumblings of ‘eye pokes’ and illegal tactics have begun to surface from Florian’s camp. (No word yet as to whether or not Mrs. Florian will appear on behalf of her son in front of an athletic commission)

Speaking to Fighthype.com, Kenny Florian’s brother Keith was reportedly quoted saying:

There are a lot of things that happened during the fight that you may or you may not have seen. Kenny got poked in the eye, which BJ is notorious for. He did it against Matt Hughes twice in one fight and once in their first fight. He did it against Georges St. Pierre in both fights. He was hitting behind the head all of the time. Kenny won’t say this, but I certainly will.

In an appearance on MMA Junkie Radio, Kenny Florian agreed with his brother’s contention that he was poked in the eye during his bout with Penn, but added “I don’t want to use that as an excuse, though,” and that further “I’m going to go ahead and say they were accidental.”

So, it looks like Kenny is attempting to sidestep any controversy, while his brother Keith is clearly more than willing to spark up another sh#tstorm with the Penn crew. (Although to really piss of Penn, Keith should have accused him of greasing…)

With BJ probably taking on Diego Sanchez next, we think the champion should just save his verbal ammunition for his next challenger. Afterall, the word’s ’softspoken’ and ‘easygoing’ have never been used to describe “The Nightmare”. (Although ’scary’ and ‘a little off’ likely have)

Joe “Daddy” Stevenson vs. Diego Sanchez is a very interesting match up. Most insiders are picking Diego based on his athleticism, wrestling, and overall strength coming down from welterweight. Fair enough. This will be Sanchez’s first fight at 155 and Joe Silva showed no sympathy in choosing his opponent.

After brutal losses to B.J. Penn and Kenny Florian, Joe Daddy has lost a lot of respect in the lightweight division and is looking to get back on the winning track. Keep in mind that Florian and Penn are the #1 and #2 ranked fighters at 155, so even though he lost (and lost BADLY), at least they came from the top guys and not someone like Mac Danzig.

Joe Daddy is the kind of fighter you can’t help but like. He has solid wrestling skills, superior jiu-jitsu skills and the best guillotine choke we have ever seen. If he gets that sucker locked in, forget about it. In order for Joe Daddy to win this fight he has to keep it on the ground where he can utilize his jiu-jitsu skills and submissions. The biggest area of concern for Stevenson in this fight is his stand up game. His boxing skills are straight up dreadful. He looks slow, stiff, and erratic when he gets involved in an exchange. Luckily for Stevenson, we see this fight being predominately on the ground.

Diego Sanchez as a welterweight is one bad dude. Diego Sanchez at lightweight though is a total bad ass. Diego has notable victories over Karo Parysian, Joe Riggs, Nick Diaz and Kenny Florian. And in both losses (against Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch), he went the distance. Diego has been in his fair share of wars and we don’t expect Joe Stevenson to surprise him with anything. Diego doesn’t have the best stand up game either, but if he wants to keep this fight standing he can definitely score some points. Diego, like Joe, is a ground and pound type fighter so we expect him to test his ground skills against Joe Daddy.

Regardless of Stevenson’s grappling, wrestling, and submission skills we think Diego is just the better fighter. Diego has the infamous “IT” factor going for him. He is relentless, focused and determined to make noise at 155. His size, power and heart will be too much for Joe Daddy to handle. It won’t come easy, but we like Diego Sanchez.

Diego by TKO in 2nd round.

We will bet $455 to win $140. Make your wagers here.
